Fostering Good Behaviour
Our ethos is to notice good behaviour and give attention to children who are making the right choices. We have a very positive attitude towards discipline, awarding children with individual, group or class marbles for good effort and attitude. Children belong to one of five school teams, Blue, Green, Red, Yellow or Black – these colours are based on the Olympic colours. Children are able to earn their Team points by gaining ‘marbles’ for their learning as well as by exceptional behaviour or attitudes around the school. There is a healthy spirit of competitiveness between the teams.
In addition, each class has a system for rewarding our school values of Teamwork, Respect, Enthusiasm and Excellence that result in a class ‘treat’. These are treasured incentives that encourage children to behave well. Every child in KS1 and 2 also has a learning passport that rewards positive learning behaviours - Collaboration, Concentration, Curiosity, Challenge, Creativity, Resilience and Reflection- they can also gain passport points for demonstrating the school “TREE” values of Teamwork, Respect, Enthusiasm and Excellence.
Another incentive for good behaviour and excellence is the use of a teacher ‘EX’ in the marking code encouraging positive relationships and a focus on continued hard work and improvement. For outstanding learning, behaviour or social skills children are sent to the Headteacher to be rewarded with a certificate for Excellence and can achieve a bronze, silver, gold and platinum (very rare) certificate in a school year.
There are, of course, always a few children who struggle with behaviour in any school. For these children, we like to work closely with their parents/carers to help the children to build up their self-esteem to give them the confidence to make right choices. If a child has had a bad day, they can start afresh the following day.
The School ‘Good Behaviour’ Policy is linked on this web page and details more about possible rewards and sanctions used by the school. If you would like a paper copy of this policy – please speak to the school office.
